summer skin

a clear blue sky and a stirring of crickets was today's reminder that yes, summer is finally here. summer in australia is a little different to most places, i think. it brings with it - in my opinion - a multitude of problems; insects, sunburn and sweltering heat. but in australia we're also characteristically at ease so the incessant humming of pests and pink hues that spread like an epidemic over australian backs seem trivial compared to the of the joyful memories of beaches, familial christmas gatherings and warm weather prevalent for the months ahead. ordinarily a big fan of winter, and thus pretty much anti-summer, i was surprised to find myself unfazed by this year's blinding tree-scattered sun or the patchy redness of my skin from lying in the grass all day. moreover i greeted it with, dare i say, embrace. in short, i'm beginning to think that perhaps summer is not so bad after all.
