microcosm

i'm usually not into bugs and science and all that junk, but stumbling across these images in my university research i am in complete awe. measured in microns (one millionth of a metre), they're pretty freaking fantastic in showing the beauty of an otherwise uncharted territory that is the tiny universe under our feet.

1. walnut leaf cross section magnified at 50 microns 2. figeater beetle's foot, at 94 microns (about the size of one human hair) 3. surface of louse 598x 4. ever wonder what ants look like? gross, huh? its eye is about 300 microns wide 5. eye of noctuid moth, each of those little circle facets being 25 microns 6. mosquito's antennae 1504x 7. hornet leg 87x. (fuck, so that's what got me one time.) 8. high magnification 5653x of bug's eye 9. crimson clover flower petal 1438x 10. pyralidae moth with its eye at 800 microns wide 11. macrofoam sponge, low magnification of 23x 12. breast cancer cell at a high, unspecified magnification 13. another black walnut tree leaf 14. penta lanceolata flower 140 microns wide 15. beetle at low magnification of 58x
